There are regular Philadelphia squirrels that climb trees and then there are flying squirrels that actually glide through the air. Whichever type you have living in the attic, getting them out can be very tricky. If there are squirrels in your attic, you would have to worry about babies as well. First you should investigate whether there is a nest in your attic before you hatch your plan to get rid of them. If you separate the mother from its offspring, you can cause more damage than good. The mother would gnaw away at your house in order to get in and you risk having the babies starve to death, causing a horrible odor in your house.
Here are some methods you can try to get Pennsylvania squirrels out of the attic:
• Hire Professionals – This is the safest and fastest way to get squirrels out of the attic. They would know what to do and give you advice on how you can keep them out. You may need to pay for the service but you would not have to do any work yourself.
• Repellent – There are no poisonous substances that can kill squirrels, you would more find rat poison or flying and crawling insect poison. There is one repellent called “Bonide's Repel All Animal Repellents” that would irritate them enough to find a new home. It comes in a granulated form as well as a concentrated liquid. Spray it or sprinkle it in your attic and the squirrel should leave the area and not return.
• Set Traps – Before setting traps, you would have to investigate the entry points that the Philadelphia squirrel may use. Squirrels hardly ever go into trap but if you set it up strategically at the entry and exit points, then you do have a chance of trapping them or preventing them from returning. However, you first need to ensure that there are no young ones around. If there are, you should wait at least 6 to 7 weeks until they become fully grown and can leave as well, or remove them after you trap their mother. You do not want to her to destroy half your roof trying to get back in for her young ones.
• Destroy the Environment – I do not mean to physically destroy your attic but you can do things to make the squirrel feel unwelcomed. Squirrels set up their dens in attics because they want a safe environment for their babies. You can place bright lights and leave a radio on so that it would annoy and disturb them. They would no longer feel safe in the attic and would try to leave with their offspring as soon as they could.
Squirrels would leave several times during the day in search of food. You should monitor when they leave so you can figure out where they enter from. When sealing off the attic, use steel rather than wood. Squirrels have very sharp teeth and they can eat away at your home, making tiny holes large enough for them to get in and out.
